Austin Weekend Guide: July 17-19

Austin Weekend Guide: July 17-19

Mid July in Austin means triple digits by 3pm, so this weekend is all about early starts, shade, and rooms with working AC. The good news is the city obliges. Red River is throwing a free block party Saturday, and there is a stargazing hang on the east side after the sun finally gives up.

Saturday Morning Pick

Barton Springs, but do it the local way. Gates open at 5am, and swimming is free before 8am when the lifeguards come on. The water holds at 68 degrees year round, which in July feels less like a pool and more like a reset button. Get there by 7, do a few laps under the pecan trees, and be back in the car before the parking lot on Barton Springs Road turns into a standoff.

Brunch Worth the Wait

Better Half on West 5th is the move if you want a patio and a real cocktail with breakfast. Order the fried chicken sandwich with a side of potatoes, and expect a 30 to 45 minute wait if you show up between 10 and noon on Saturday. If you want in and out with less ceremony, Paperboy on East 11th does one of the better breakfast plates in town. Get the hash with a sunny egg, grab a seat outside early, and you can be done before the heat gets serious.

Live Music This Weekend

Friday night has range. The Isle of Qveen tour lands at ACL Live at the Moody Theater downtown, or you can head south to the Far Out Lounge where Shady Oaks plays with WASTED, Bogan Villa, and Static Slums starting at 7pm, and the whole night runs cheaper than a single downtown cocktail. Saturday is the one to circle though. The Red River Cultural District runs Hot Summer Nights starting at 5pm, a free multi-venue crawl with bands at Mohawk, Empire, and the rest of the strip. No ticket needed, just walk the block and follow whatever sounds good. If you want a proper show instead, Carson Jeffrey plays Antone's on West 5th Saturday night, with tickets typically in the 20 dollar range.

Sunday Chill

The farmers market at Mueller runs Sunday morning at Branch Park. Grab a coffee and a breakfast taco from one of the vendors, browse the peach situation while Texas peaches are still in season, then walk the lake loop before 11 when the shade still counts for something. If you overdid it Saturday, the whole thing works at half speed.

Local Hidden Gem

St. Elmo Brewing's Springdale location is hosting a stargazing party Saturday from 8 to 11pm with the Austin Astronomical Society. They bring real telescopes, you bring a beer, and you get planets and galaxies from a brewery patio. It costs nothing beyond your tab, and almost nobody knows the Astronomical Society does these public nights at all.

ATX Weekly App Tip

💡 ATX Weekly Tip: Hot Summer Nights spans a dozen venues with overlapping set times, so open the Events tab in the ATX Weekly app and save the acts you care about. The app sorts your saves by start time so you can plan your walk up and down Red River instead of guessing.
