Austin Weekend Guide: July 24-26

Late July in Austin means triple digits by 3 pm, so this weekend runs on a simple schedule: outside early, inside later. There's a Lego convention out at Kalahari, a two-day artisan market at Distribution Hall, and Bob Schneider back at Antone's on Saturday night. Here's the plan.

Saturday Morning Pick

Barton Springs Pool, before 9 am. The pool opens at 5 am for swim-at-your-own-risk hours, and entry is free until the guarded session starts at 8. The water sits at 68 degrees year round, which reads cold on paper and feels like a miracle in July. Bring a towel, claim a spot on the grassy hill, and be gone before the line at the gate wraps around the bathhouse. Paid entry after 8 am runs $5 for Austin residents and $9 if you're not.

Brunch Worth the Wait

Paperboy on East 11th is the move if you can handle a 30 to 45 minute wait on a Saturday. Order the basic biscuit sandwich or the hash with sweet potato and pork belly, then grab a seat on the covered patio. If the line looks grim, Better Half on West 6th usually turns tables faster. Get the breakfast sandwich and a frozen coffee, and know that the garlic aioli fries are a legitimate brunch order even at 10 am.

Live Music This Weekend

Friday night has range. Marco Antonio Solís plays the Moody Center for the big-room crowd, while Emo Nite takes over Vulcan Gas Co. on 6th Street at 9 pm if you'd rather scream along to My Chemical Romance with 500 strangers. For something cheaper, Hotel Vegas on East 6th has GUZZLR, Trip Cigs, Heavy Velvet, and Shysters, and cover there rarely tops $15. Saturday is Bob Schneider at Antone's with Chicago blues veteran John Primer. Doors at 7, show at 8, 21 and up, and tickets are on the Antone's site. Ramón Ayala is at the Moody Center the same night if norteño is more your speed.

Sunday Chill

The Vibe Artisan Market runs Saturday and Sunday at Distribution Hall from 11 am to 5 pm, and Sunday is the calmer day to go. Over 100 local makers, a cocktail bar, an espresso bar, and DJ sets, plus free parking and dogs welcome. If you want something even lower effort, Music Moves Mountains at Central Machine Works runs 1 to 4 pm with free live music and a shaded beer hall to hide in.

Local Hidden Gem

Coupland Dancehall, about 40 minutes northeast of town, is a working Texas dancehall from 1904 that most Austinites have never set foot in. This weekend earns the drive: Dale Watson plays Friday and Reverend Horton Heat plays Saturday. Wood floors, cold beer, two-stepping couples who clearly did not learn last week. Go once and you'll wonder why you kept paying for parking downtown.
