Austin Weekend Guide: June 12-14
The World Cup officially takes over Austin this weekend, and the city is leaning in hard. It's also going to be hot, well above seasonal averages, so plan your outdoor stuff early. Here's where to be Friday through Sunday.
Saturday Morning Pick
Beat the heat with an early swim at Barton Springs. The pool opens at 5 a.m. and entry is free until 8, when lifeguards come on duty and the fee kicks in. The water holds at 68 degrees year round, which will feel like a miracle by Saturday afternoon. If you'd rather shop than swim, the downtown farmers market at Republic Square runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 422 Guadalupe. Get there before 10 if you want peaches that haven't been picked over.
Brunch Worth the Wait
Bird Bird Biscuit on Manor Road is still the move for a no-frills weekend breakfast. Order the Queen Beak, a fried chicken biscuit with chipotle-bacon spread, and expect a 20 to 30 minute line out the door by 9:30 on Saturdays. It moves fast since most people grab and go. For a sit-down option, Better Half on West 5th does a smoked pork carnitas breakfast taco and good espresso, with a shaded patio that stays comfortable until about 11. Waits there run shorter, usually 15 minutes or less if you show up before 10:30.
Live Music This Weekend
Friday night, BIG K.R.I.T. plays Emo's on East Riverside with Kirby opening. If you'd rather dance, Noizu takes over The Concourse Project at 9 p.m. for an 18-and-up house set. Saturday, Buckethead brings his masked guitar weirdness back to Emo's at 7:30 p.m., and Antone's has Nico Little & The North Americans with Sachin and the Porch at 9 p.m., a solid cheap option downtown. If you want something bigger, The Fellowship of the Ring screens with a live orchestra at Bass Concert Hall all three nights, tickets from $41.
Sunday Chill
The Texas Farmers' Market at Mueller runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Philomena Street. It's the more relaxed of the big weekend markets, with shade trees, live acoustic sets, and enough breakfast vendors that you can make it your late brunch. Grab kolaches and coffee, then walk it off around Mueller Lake Park next door.
Local Hidden Gem
Inn Cahoots on East 6th is turning itself into a free World Cup hub starting Saturday, showing every match of the tournament for 37 straight days. Most people haven't clocked it yet, so this weekend is your window before it becomes the default soccer bar in town. No cover, multiple screens, and East 6th food options within a block when you get hungry between matches.
ATX Weekly App Tip
💡 ATX Weekly Tip: Hot weekends fill up patios fast. Open the Deals tab in the ATX Weekly app and filter by Happy Hour to find which spots near you have drink specials running Saturday afternoon, so you're not paying full price to escape the sun.
