Austin Weekend Guide: June 20-22

Austin Weekend Guide: June 20-22

It's a big weekend in Austin. Juneteenth falls on Friday, which means the city has a full slate of events running through Sunday alongside the usual music, food, and outdoor hang options. Here's what's worth your time.

Saturday Morning Pick

SFC Farmers Market Downtown runs Saturday from 9am to 1pm at 401 San Antonio Street in Republic Square. It's a solid way to start the day before the heat hits. Local farmers, food artisans, and usually some live music on the side. Get there before 10:30 if you want to actually browse without bumping into a crowd. Grab a kolache from one of the vendors and sit in the park for a bit.

Brunch Worth the Wait

Mattie's on West Live Oak has been doing brunch since 1946, and it still earns the line. Get the brisket hash or the french toast. Weekend waits usually run 30 to 45 minutes if you show up at 10:30 or later, so either go early (9am is fine) or put your name in and walk the neighborhood while you wait. The backyard patio is shaded and worth sitting in when it's not punishing outside. Juliet Italian Kitchen on West 6th just launched a bottomless brunch, Saturdays and Sundays, if you want something livelier with a longer runway.

Live Music This Weekend

Kevin Morby and Liam Kazar play Stubb's Waller Creek Amphitheater on Saturday. Doors open at 7pm. Stubb's outdoor stage fits a lot of people but still has that open-air Austin feel. Tickets are available on Ticketmaster. Also Saturday, Parker Millsap is at Antone's Nightclub, which is a smaller, more intimate room if you want to be up close. On Friday night, check Franky Wah at Kingdom for something on the electronic side. The Paramount Summer Classic Film Series is also running if live music isn't your thing this weekend.

Sunday Chill

The Neill-Cochran House Museum is hosting a Juneteenth Celebration on Sunday from noon to 4pm, free to attend, with food and performances by Christopher D. Spivey & Co. and the Jeremy George Quintet. It's a beautiful historic property near UT, and this is one of those events that's genuinely worth showing up for. Low-key, meaningful, and easy to pair with a walk through the neighborhood before or after.

Local Hidden Gem

Kome on Airport Boulevard is one of those places that regulars try to keep to themselves. It's a neighborhood Japanese spot, not a sushi bar, but the kind of homestyle cooking, ramen, and shared plates that feels like someone actually cooked for you. It's on a stretch of Airport that most people drive past on the way to somewhere else. Go on Sunday evening when things have quieted down. They don't take reservations for smaller parties so you might wait a bit, but it moves fast.
