Austin Weekend Guide: June 6-7
June heat is officially here, and this weekend has enough going on to justify leaving your AC for a few hours. Saturday and Sunday both have something worth getting out for, whether that's live music, a market haul, or just a good taco and some shade.
Saturday Morning Pick
The Barton Creek Farmers Market runs Saturdays from 9am to 1pm out at Barton Creek Square Mall on S. Capital of Texas Hwy. June means Fredericksburg peaches are showing up at vendor tables, along with fresh bread, local cheeses, and a few food trucks worth lingering around. There's live music most weeks. Go early, grab a coffee from one of the vendors, and make a loop before it gets crowded around 11am.
Brunch Worth the Wait
Tamale House on Airport Blvd has been feeding Austin since 1958, and the migas plate is still one of the best breakfasts in the city. Get Mom's migas with queso. The pork tamales with adobo sauce are also the move. It fills up by 10am on Saturdays, so either get there early or expect a short wait. If you want something a bit more East Austin, Paperboy on East 5th does a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich that people genuinely show up for. Expect a line on Saturdays after 10am.
Live Music This Weekend
Friday night, Wale and Smino bring their Everything Is A Lot tour to Stubb's Waller Creek Amphitheater with doors at 7pm. That's a strong lineup for an outdoor June show. Also Friday, Calder Allen plays the Continental Club starting at 10pm. Saturday, Armadillo Live runs at Central Machine Works from 7pm to 11pm, benefitting KUTX. White Denim headlines alongside Arc Iris and Gran Moreno. One of the better weekend shows with a good cause attached. Wolfmother is doing their 20th Anniversary Tour at Emo's Austin on Saturday at 7pm if you want something louder.
Sunday Chill
Barton Springs Pool is the obvious answer on a hot June Sunday, and it's the right one. Admission is $5 for adults. The water stays around 68 degrees year-round, which is the whole point when it's pushing 95 outside. Get there by 10am to snag a good spot on the grass. Bring a book or just float around. There's nowhere better to spend a slow Sunday afternoon in Austin.
Local Hidden Gem
The Big Ole Queer Market is happening this weekend at Palmer Events Center, running both Saturday and Sunday. It's a market focused on local LGBTQIA+ small businesses, with drag performances, author readings, and interactive games mixed in. Most people have no idea this one exists. If you've been wanting to support local makers and catch something different from the usual weekend options, this is worth a stop.
