Austin Weekend Guide: May 1-3
May is officially here and Austin is squeezing every drop out of the patio season before the heat takes over. Courtney Barnett is at Radio/East tonight, the Front Market takes over both Saturday and Sunday with 170 vendors, and Sunday brings WNBA preseason hoops to Moody Center. Here is what is worth your time.
Saturday Morning Pick
Skip the downtown crowd and hit the SFC Farmers Market at Sunset Valley. It runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and has more local produce than the Republic Square one. Park behind the toy store on Brodie Lane. After, walk the Violet Crown Trail for a quick mile loop. The first stretch from the Sunset Valley trailhead puts you under live oaks the whole way.
Brunch Worth the Wait
June's All Day on South Congress takes brunch reservations Saturdays through Resy and you should book a few days out. The croque madame and the rotisserie chicken hash are the moves. Walk-ins by 10:30 a.m. usually face a 60 to 90 minute wait. For a no-wait option, head to Bouldin Creek Cafe on South 1st. All vegetarian, open since 2000, and the Tofu Scramble Reborn with veggie sausage runs about $14 with coffee.
Live Music This Weekend
Friday night is stacked. Courtney Barnett plays Radio/East at 6:30 p.m., tickets in the $40s. Los Lobos hits Dell Hall at the Long Center at 7:30 p.m., closer to $60 at the door. The Paper Kites play Bass Concert Hall at 7 p.m. Saturday is country day with Luke Bryan, Kane Brown, and Parker McCollum on an outdoor lineup, plus Saengerfest taking over downtown noon to 10 p.m. with German beer, wine, and live bands. Doors 7 p.m. on most of the indoor shows.
Sunday Chill
WNBA preseason comes to Moody Center Sunday, Dallas Wings against the Las Vegas Aces. Tickets are way cheaper than regular season, often under $25 if you grab them early. Tip-off is in the afternoon. If hoops are not your thing, the Front Market runs again Sunday at Fair Market with 170-plus Texas-based women and LGBTQ-owned vendors, a brunch menu, and local DJs. Free entry.
Local Hidden Gem
The 3rd Annual Derby Day Party Saturday is the kind of thing transplants miss. Hat competition, best-dressed couples contest, themed cocktails, and the Weldon Henson Band playing a country set from 2 to 5 p.m. Proceeds go to Folds of Honor Central Texas. Wear something with feathers and you will fit right in. If you want to skip the crowds entirely, the Texas Wine Auction Weekend at Contracommon in Bee Cave runs Friday 6 to 10 p.m. with tickets at $30 in advance. Real Hill Country wines pouring all night.
ATX Weekly App Tip
💡 ATX Weekly Tip: The map view is your friend when there are this many concerts on one night. Open the app, tap the map icon, and filter by Music to see Friday's Courtney Barnett, Los Lobos, and Paper Kites all at once. Save the venues you want and the directions are one tap away.
