Austin Weekend Guide: May 16-17
Austin just hit its first real stretch of summer heat, so this weekend rewards early starts and shade. George Strait has the Moody Center booked both Friday and Saturday, which means downtown gets messy after 6. Plan around that and the rest of the weekend opens right up.
Saturday Morning Pick
Get to Barton Springs Pool by 8 a.m. The water holds around 68 to 70 degrees all year, which feels sharp in May and just right by 9. Non-resident entry runs about $9 for adults. Show up early and you get lap lanes and open lawn before people claim every shady spot on the hill. By noon it is a completely different scene.
Brunch Worth the Wait
Two good options, both with a wait. Joann's Fine Foods on South Congress does not take reservations, so figure 30 to 45 minutes on a Saturday. Put your name in, walk the strip, come back. Order the migas plate and a frozen paloma. If you want something quieter, Cisco's on East Sixth has been serving since 1948. Get the migas and a basket of biscuits, and the wait is usually shorter because half the city forgets it is there.
Live Music This Weekend
Friday night, Chet Faker plays Emo's with doors at 7 p.m. and tickets in the $40 range if any are left. George Strait takes the Moody Center both Friday and Saturday at 7:30, though at this point that means resale prices and a real splurge. Saturday the better value is Mac DeMarco at ACL Live at the Moody Theater, doors at 6:30 and music at 8, with Tex Crick opening. Those ran around $55 and the room sounds clean from just about any seat.
Sunday Chill
Hit the Texas Farmers' Market at Mueller on Sunday, open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Grab a kolache and a cold brew, then walk it off with a loop around Mueller Lake Park. The path is flat, the shade comes in patches, and you can watch kids fish off the dock while you do nothing in particular. That is the entire point of a Sunday.
Local Hidden Gem
Mayfield Park, tucked off 35th Street near Laguna Gloria, is free and people drive past it for years without stopping. There are peacocks. Real ones, roaming the cottage gardens and koi ponds like they pay rent. Trails out the back connect to the greenbelt if you want to keep going. Get there in the morning before it heats up and you might have it to yourself.
ATX Weekly App Tip
💡 ATX Weekly Tip: Open the app, tap the Live Music filter, and sort by Tonight to see what is playing near you right now. Hit the heart on any show to save it and you will get a reminder when doors open. With two George Strait nights at the Moody Center, the map view also helps you find shows and parking away from the downtown crunch.
