Austin Weekend Guide: October 30-November 1

Austin Weekend Guide: October 30-November 1

It's Halloween weekend, and the calendar is lopsided in a good way. Saturday night is the big one, but Friday has some of the better shows. Also, the clocks fall back Sunday, so you get an extra hour to recover.

Saturday Morning Pick

Go to the SFC Farmers' Market Downtown at Republic Square, 422 Guadalupe St. It runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, with about 40 vendors. Parking is free at the State of Texas Garage N on San Antonio St. during market hours. Register your plate, skip the payment, and grab a code at the yellow SFC info booth. Get there by 9:30 and you will have room to browse before the lines build.

Brunch Worth the Wait

Joe's Bakery & Coffee Shop on East Cesar Chavez is the old-school answer. Order the migas or breakfast tacos with a side of fresh tortillas. It fills up fast on weekends, so aim for before 9 or plan on standing outside for a while. If you want a patio and a South Congress people-watching view, Cafe No Se is the other pick. It gets busy after 10, so go early or go late. Check each place's hours before you head out, since holiday weekends can shift them.

Live Music This Weekend

Friday, Squirrel Flower plays 29th Street Ballroom with Sour Widows, doors at 7 p.m. If you want something louder and later, The Heavy Heavy is at the Continental Club at 10 p.m. The War and Treaty are at Scoot Inn with a 6 p.m. start. Saturday, Madeon plays ACL Live with Anamanaguchi, and tickets run through AXS. Osees are at Hotel Vegas the same night, and The Jesus and Mary Chain are at Far Out Lounge with Protomartyr. Ticket prices and Saturday door times were not posted where I looked, so check each venue page before you go.

Sunday Chill

The Texas Farmers Market at Mueller runs Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Grab coffee, pick up something for dinner, then walk the paths around Mueller Lake Park. Confirm hours on their page since the schedule can change. Remember the time change. Your phone will fix itself, your oven clock will not.

Local Hidden Gem

Codependent is a dog-friendly bar, and Saturday it hosts Howl-O-Ween. Admission is free and a reservation is recommended. Expect pet portraits, a live DJ, seasonal cocktails, and a dog costume contest. Your dog does not need a costume, but the ones in costume will get all the attention.

ATX Weekly App Tip

💡 ATX Weekly Tip: Open the ATX Weekly app and filter events to this weekend before you leave the house. It is the quickest way to see what is on near you, and it beats scrolling five venue sites.
