Austin Weekend Guide: September 18-20

Fantastic Fest has taken over Alamo South Lamar through the 24th, the Longhorns are home against UTSA on Saturday, and more than 30 museums open free on Sunday for Austin Museum Day. ACL is two weeks out, which makes this the last ordinary weekend at Zilker before the fences go up. Here is how to spend it.

Saturday Morning Pick

Barton Springs Pool, early. Gates open at 5 a.m. and the water holds around 68 degrees regardless of what the forecast does. Get there before 9 and you get the south lawn mostly to yourself and a street spot on Azie Morton without circling three times. Entry runs about $5 for Austin residents and $9 for everyone else, and the pool closes Thursdays for cleaning. One reason to go this particular Saturday: Zilker's Great Lawn closes Monday, September 21 for ACL build-out and stays closed through October 18. The pool stays open the whole time, but the sprawl-out-on-the-grass part of Zilker goes away for a month.

Brunch Worth the Wait

Veracruz All Natural on East Cesar Chavez is still the migas taco benchmark. Order the migas, add the avocado, and get a green juice you will not regret. The line looks worse than it is because it moves in one direction and the kitchen is fast, so figure 15 to 20 minutes on a Saturday before 11. If you want a table and a chair, Bouldin Creek Cafe at 1900 South First is the other call. Get the Renedict. The wait after 10 a.m. runs 30 to 45 minutes on weekends, and they do not take reservations, so put your name in and walk down to the Bouldin Creek neighborhood blocks while you wait.

Live Music This Weekend

Friday at Mohawk it is Cold Waves XIV, the Austin edition of the Chicago industrial and post-punk festival, on the outdoor stage. Doors at 7 p.m., music at 8. Same night, Antone's has Nik Parr and The Selfless Lovers with Robert Parker Jr. opening, doors around 7 and the first set at 8. Saturday Mohawk runs two rooms: Six Sex outdoors at 7 p.m. and Paranoid Androids indoors at 8. For something quieter, Monks Jazz Club has Nicholas Payton on Friday and saxophonist Charles McPherson on Saturday, two seated sets a night in a real listening room, and those tickets tend to go before the day of the show. Ticket prices vary by show and none of these venues had published a flat door price as of Friday morning, so check the venue page before you drive over. MUNA is also playing Moody Amphitheater this weekend if you want something bigger.

ACL 2026: Getting to Zilker Without a Parking Spot

The 25th ACL runs October 2 through 4 and October 9 through 11 at Zilker Park, 2100 Barton Springs Road. Nine stages, 100 plus sets, with Charli XCX, Rufus Du Sol, Twenty One Pilots, Lorde and The XX across both weekends, Skrillex on Weekend 1 only and Kings of Leon on Weekend 2 only. Start planning the transportation now, because there is no parking at Zilker and none in the surrounding neighborhoods either. The free shuttle from Republic Square at 4th and Guadalupe is included with every wristband and drops at the Barton Springs West entrance, which is the single easiest option if you are anywhere near downtown. CapMetro's 803 MetroRapid gets you close from north or south Lamar. Rideshare drop-off and pickup are at three points only: Veterans Drive under the MoPac pedestrian bridge, Lee Barton Drive between Riverside and Barton Springs, and Wallingford Drive. Coming from north of the river, walking or biking across the MoPac pedestrian bridge into the Lady Bird entrance beats every other option, and bike valet is free. Barton Springs Road, Stratford Drive, Azie Morton Road and the northbound MoPac access road all close during festival hours. On bags: anything 6 by 9 inches or smaller with one pocket can be whatever material you want, and anything bigger has to be fully clear plastic or vinyl and no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches. Bring an empty reusable bottle, since the refill stations inside are free and the water lines are shorter than the beer lines. Early October in Austin still runs upper 80s most years and the Zilker field has close to zero shade after 11 a.m., so a hat, electrolytes and a planned sit-down break around 3 p.m. are not optional. Exact set times for each stage post to the ACL app closer to the festival, not yet.

Sunday Chill

Austin Museum Day is Sunday, September 20, and more than 30 museums drop admission entirely. The Blanton, Mexic-Arte, the Neill-Cochran House and the Contemporary at Laguna Gloria are all in. Laguna Gloria is the one to build a Sunday around: the grounds run down to Lake Austin, the sculpture trail takes about 40 minutes at a slow pace, and it is shaded for most of it. Hours vary by museum and a few of the smaller ones only open a half day, so check the list before you build a route.

Local Hidden Gem

The Butterfly Bar at The Vortex, 2307 Manor Road. It is the outdoor bar attached to a black-box theater, which means the crowd on any given night is half people who just saw a play and half people who have no idea a play happened. String lights, picnic tables, no televisions, and a cocktail list that is better than a theater bar has any business having. Patrizi's parks in the same lot and the cacio e pepe is the move. Go on a weeknight or early Saturday, before the show lets out around 9:30 and the patio fills in.
