Rainey Street Bar Guide: The Honest Version

Rainey Street Bar Guide: The Honest Version

Rainey Street gets a lot of hate, and a fair amount of it is deserved. The bachelorette parties, the sticky sidewalks, the lines to get into bars that aren't worth the wait. But there are still rainey street bars worth your time if you know which doors to walk through and which to keep walking past. This is the honest take from someone who actually lives here.

Half Step is where I send people who care about cocktails

Half Step (75 1/2 Rainey) is still the best cocktail program on the street, and it's not close. Old Fashioneds run around $15 and they actually stir them properly. The patio is the move, with string lights and enough space that you can hear your friends talk. Go on a weeknight between 4 and 7 if you want a seat. After 9 on a Friday it turns into a different bar.

Banger's for groups and out-of-towners

Banger's (79 Rainey) is the one I send visiting friends to. The patio is massive, there are over 200 beers on tap, and the sausage menu actually delivers. Mimosas by the liter on weekends if that's your thing. Yes, it's a tourist hub. But it's also the easiest place to land a group of six on a busy night without standing in a line for 40 minutes.

Lucille Patio Lounge if you want to actually talk

Lucille (77 Rainey) is one of the original bungalow bars and still feels like a backyard party instead of a club. Cocktails run $7 to $11 and the happy hour goes until 7 on weekdays with $5 beers. This is where I end up when I want to sit outside, hear the conversation, and not get bumped into every two minutes. It's also one of the few rainey street austin spots that doesn't feel performative.

Stay Put for beer drinkers

Stay Put is the district's only brewpub, and that alone makes it worth the visit. The wrap-around patio is generous, the house IPAs and lagers are solid, and it draws a slightly older crowd than most of the street. Go here when you want a beer and a seat, not a scene.

The Modern Bar is the new kid actually worth checking out

The Modern Bar opened earlier this year on the ground floor of The Modern condo tower at the northern edge of the district. It's a 5,000 square foot space that pours coffee in the morning and pivots to cocktails at night, with most drinks landing between $14 and $18. It's polished, quieter than the bungalow bars, and a good call for a date where you want to actually have a conversation. If you've written off Rainey, this is the spot most likely to change your mind.

What to skip and when not to go

Friday after 9 and most of Saturday on Rainey is just chaos. Sticky sidewalks, lines to cross the street, twenty minute waits to get a beer. The bars pushing EDM and bottle service are not the play. If what you really want is a dive, go east of I-35 or up to Deep Eddy Cabaret on Lavaca instead. The quiet truth: Sunday afternoons might be the best time on Rainey Street, especially if the weather is decent. Patios are open, the crowd is mellow, and you can actually find parking.
