Ramen Tatsu-ya East Runs Happy Hour Twice a Day, and the One That Matters Starts at 9PM
Most Austin happy hours are over by 7, which is a strange thing to build a nightlife district around. Ramen Tatsu-ya on East 6th runs two of them — the normal 3 to 5, and a second one that opens at 9 and runs until they close the doors. That second window is the whole reason to know about this place.
You will not miss the building. There is a black lucky cat about the size of a refrigerator sitting out front, one paw up, a gold medallion around its neck and a cutout of Texas in its lap. Behind it: bamboo, a rack of red and white lanterns, a stack of sake barrels, a small neon BAR sign pointing you in. Around the corner there is a face on the wall with its tongue out and the Tatsu-ya logo stamped on the tongue. The whole corner is doing a bit, and it commits.
The Board, Line by Line
It is a small laminated card on the bar with a Godzilla-adjacent monster holding a beer on it, and four lines of pricing. Two windows, seven days a week: 3 to 5pm, then 9pm until close.
- Kirin pitchers — $10 — Daily. This is the headline and it is not close
- Munchies — $5 — The snack menu, flattened to one price
- Frozens and NA drinks — $2.50 — The slushie case and the zero-proof list
- Kusa Bomb — $1 — Bombs run $2 on the regular menu, so this is half
Run that against the regular menu and the $5 munchies line is doing more work than it looks like. Karaage and the Sweet & Sour Yodas are $8 normally. Chili oil gyoza is $7. Katsu sliders are $7, plain gyoza $6.50, spicy edamame $6.50. Flattening all of that to $5 means the expensive snacks are the ones to order, and the cheap ones — the $5.50 korokke, the $6 edamame — are barely a deal at all. Order accordingly.
The $10 Kirin pitcher is the line that changes your night. A pitcher and two orders of karaage is $20 for two people, at a bar on East 6th, at 10pm. There is not a lot of that going around.
One caveat, stated plainly: the card on the bar says Summer Happy Hour, and we photographed it in late August. The two windows and the pricing are what is posted in the shop right now, but a seasonal board can change with the season. Worth a phone call before you build a Friday around it.
The 9PM Window Is the Part Nobody Uses
Here is why this location specifically. Most Ramen Tatsu-ya shops close at 10pm. East Austin closes at 11pm Sunday through Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday — the longest hours in the whole group. So the 9pm-til-close window is a real two hours on a weeknight and a real three hours on the weekend, not the fifteen-minute technicality it would be at the other shops.
That puts $10 pitchers and $5 snacks on the table at the exact hour East 6th fills up and every other kitchen on the strip is either closing or charging full freight. Show up at 9:15 on a Thursday and you are ordering into happy hour pricing while the block outside is at peak.
Two hours of $10 pitchers on a weeknight, three on a weekend, at a ramen shop that stays open later than any other one they run. That is the entire pitch.
What to Eat: the Texas Tonk and the Hot Pocketz
The Texas Tonk is $17 and it is the bowl to order if you have never had one here. Their 60-hour pork bone broth, seasoned with smoked shoyu and finished with thunder oil — blackened garlic oil, chili oil and toasted bonito mayu — over thin Hakata noodles, then loaded with smoked brisket, smoked and pickled jalapeño, fermented takana mustard greens, negi and an ajitama egg. It reads like a stunt and eats like a bowl somebody thought hard about. The jalapeño is the reason it works: the broth is heavy and the pickle cuts straight through it.
It started as a summer limited-time bowl and it is on the menu now, dine-in. If it is your first visit, get it before it rotates out again.
The Hot Pocketz are the other thing to know about — brisket with Oaxaca and Monterey Jack, folded, griddled until the cheese pushes out the edges and crisps, served with a birria dip and a lime. They come three to an order. It is a quesadilla wearing a Japanese restaurant's coat and it is very good, and it is the single best argument for the $5 munchies line if it is running that night.
How to Actually Do This
Go at 9, not at 3. The afternoon window is fine but it is the same deal you can get at forty other places, and the room is empty. The late one is the version of this that only exists here.
Order the pitcher first — it anchors the table and it is the cheapest way to keep four people drinking for an hour. Then two or three munchies at $5 apiece, weighted toward the ones that cost $8 the rest of the day. Then, if anybody is actually hungry, one full-price bowl to split the difference. Four people can eat and drink well here for about $20 a head, which is not a normal sentence about East 6th after 9pm.
Parking is the usual East 6th problem. There is street parking on Comal and the side streets, it fills by 8, and it is worth walking three blocks instead of circling. The patio side is where you want to sit.
