South Congress (SoCo) Neighborhood Guide

South Congress (SoCo) Neighborhood Guide

South Congress gets shortened to SoCo and treated like a tourist trap, but there's still real stuff happening on the strip if you know where to look. This SoCo Austin guide skips the obvious traps and points you to the places locals still bother with. Some spots are worth the crowd. Most aren't.

When to actually go

Weekends after 11am on South Congress are a slog. Sidewalks pack tight near the 'I love you so much' mural, parking turns into a hunt, and the wait at Home Slice can stretch past 45 minutes. Go on a weekday morning if you can, or after 8pm when the day-trippers clear out. Sundays before noon are the quiet sweet spot, and most coffee shops still have tables open.

Coffee and a slow start

Jo's Coffee at 1242 South Congress is the postcard one. The 'I love you so much' wall is right there. Lines move fast, the iced turbo (cold brew with espresso and milk) is the move, and it runs about $5. If you want something quieter, walk a block south to Sa-Ten inside the Music Lane complex. Better pastries, a calmer patio, and a matcha latte that's worth the $6.

South Congress restaurants and bars worth the visit

For south congress restaurants and bars that actually pull their weight: Home Slice still makes the best New York slice in the city for around $5 a piece. Perla's at 1400 South Congress is the seafood patio everyone takes their parents to, oysters run about $3.50 each during happy hour (4 to 6pm weekdays). Aba does sharp Mediterranean small plates upstairs in the Music Lane block; get the hummus and the lamb. Lucky Robot is a casual sushi spot with a 4 to 6pm Tuesday through Friday happy hour where rolls drop to $7 to $9. For a real cocktail with zero scene, Watertrade is the tiny Japanese bar tucked next to Otoko inside South Congress Hotel. No reservation needed.

Where to grab a drink

The Continental Club at 1315 South Congress has been a live music room since 1955 and the cover is usually $10 to $15. C-Boy's Heart and Soul across from Continental is the late-night option, no cover most nights, and the upstairs Jade Room does decent cocktails. The new one: Only the Wild Ones opened May 1 at 1600 South Congress, a natural wine and outdoor vinyl listening bar in the old South Congress Cafe patio, open Wednesday through Sunday from 4pm. The Wheel South at 3116 South Congress opened in February if you want craft beer and a bike-shop hang.

Shopping: skip and keep

Allens Boots at 1522 South Congress is the iconic stop and still worth a walk-through even if you're not dropping $400 on boots. Uncommon Objects is a curated junk shop with weird taxidermy and old postcards; budget half an hour minimum. ByGeorge is the high-end clothing pick if that's your range. Skip most of the t-shirt and souvenir stalls. They all sell the same Willie Nelson print.

💡 ATX Weekly Tip: Use the Map view in the ATX Weekly app to plan a SoCo walk that hits everything in this guide without doubling back. Filter by neighborhood and toggle 'open now' so you don't show up to Watertrade at 2pm and find it closed.
