South Lamar and Zilker: Neighborhood Guide

South Lamar runs about two miles from Riverside down past Oltorf, and along the way it packs in more good food per block than almost any other street in town. Zilker sits right next to it, so you can swim at 8am and be eating brisket by noon without moving your car more than a mile. This is the South Lamar Austin and Zilker neighborhood guide for people who want to use the area, not tour it.

Start at Zilker Park and Barton Springs

Barton Springs Pool sits at 2201 Barton Springs Rd and holds around 68 to 70 degrees all year, which feels shocking in August and fine in January. Entry runs about $5 for Austin residents and roughly $10 if you are not, paid at the gate. There are free swim hours early in the morning before staff open the gate and again late at night, and the pool closes Thursday mornings for cleaning, so check before you drive over. On summer weekends the line forms by 11am. Go at 8am on a weekday and you will have the deep end mostly to yourself. If the pool is packed, the free side of the creek below the dam is right there, and Zilker Botanical Garden and the Umlauf Sculpture Garden on Azie Morton Rd are both quiet, shaded, and under $10.

South Lamar Restaurants Worth Planning Around

The heavy hitters sit in a tight cluster. Uchi at 801 S Lamar is the reservation you make 30 days out, though the bar takes walk-ins and the weekday early happy hour is the cheapest way to eat there. Odd Duck at 1201 S Lamar does small plates that change constantly and is one of the few nice rooms on the street where you can eat well at the bar without a booking. Ramen Tatsu-ya at 1234 S Lamar takes no reservations and the Tonkotsu Original is the order, around $16, best attempted before 6pm or after 8:30. Loro at 2115 S Lamar is the Aaron Franklin and Tyson Cole smokehouse mashup, and the oak smoked brisket with the frozen Thai tea is the whole point. Matt's El Rancho at 2613 S Lamar is the old guard, and the Bob Armstrong dip is not negotiable. Newer additions include a South Lamar Paperboy near Odd Duck, and a Mendocino Farms opening on the street September 22.

Barton Springs Road Is Its Own Thing

Do not treat Barton Springs Rd as an extension of Lamar. It runs its own program. Terry Black's at 1003 Barton Springs Rd sells brisket by the pound and the line moves fast if you get there before 11:30am, slow if you get there at 1pm. The original Chuy's at 1728 Barton Springs Rd has been in that building since 1982, and the creamy jalapeno and the Elvis green chile fried chicken are why people still go. Lou's does rotisserie chicken and frozen custard for under $20 a head. Late at night, the taco trucks near the Barton Springs and Lamar corner are still running al pastor off the trompo, cash friendly, no seating to speak of.

Coffee, Breakfast, and the Pre-Zilker Routine

The move is coffee first, swim second, real food third. Paperboy does breakfast tacos and sandwiches built for eating in a car. Bouldin Creek Cafe at 1900 S First is a ten minute detour and worth it for the veggie scramble and the fact that they serve breakfast all day. Radio Coffee and Beer at 4204 Manchaca is further south but flips from coffee shop to beer garden around 4pm, and there is usually a taco truck parked in the lot. All three fill up by 10am on Saturdays.

Where to Drink on South Lamar

Gibson Street Bar at 1109 S Lamar is the neighborhood default: big patio, a food truck out back, live music on weekends, no cover. The Highball, attached to the Alamo Drafthouse at 1120 S Lamar, has private karaoke rooms and a few bowling lanes, which makes it the rare bar that works for a group that cannot agree on anything. The Austin Beer Garden Brewing Company at 1305 W Oltorf is a short hop off Lamar and does pizza, its own beer, and free live music most nights. Skip the crawl mentality here. Pick one, stay a while, this is not Rainey.

Parking, Timing, and What to Skip

The Zilker Park lot charges a few dollars on weekdays and more on weekends during peak season, and it is full by 11am from May through September. Park free on Azie Morton Rd or Lou Neff Rd and walk ten minutes instead. South Lamar itself is street parking and small lots, so if you are eating and swimming the same day, park once near Barton Springs Rd and walk the rest. Kayak and paddleboard rentals run out of the Rowing Dock on Stratford Dr for around $25 an hour. What to skip: driving into the park on a Saturday afternoon, and waiting 45 minutes for a table anywhere on Lamar when there is a shorter line two blocks over.
